David Macbride (USA)

David macbride was born in Berkeley, California in 1951 of Euroasian heritage (his mother was born in Beijing). His principle teachers include Edward Diemente (of the Hartt College of Music), and Jack Beeson and Chou Wen-chung (of Columbia University).
Macbride has written over 200 works, ranging from solo, chamber and orchestral music to music for TV, dance and theatre, with particular emphasis on music for percussion and music for voice.
His works have been performed extensively in the United States and abroad.
Living in hartford, Connecticut, Macbride has been extremely active bringing diverse musics to the Greater Hartford Community. macbride is Professor of Composition and Music Theory at the Hartt School, University of Hartford.

For Violin and Temple Bowls.

First performance: Katie Lansdale, violin and Benjamin toth, percussion on February 7, 1999.
"In Common" combines two musical traditions: the directed, linear motion of Western music (the violin) and the static timelessness of Eastern music (the temple bowls).

Percussion requirements:
set of 7 Temple Bowls + one Temple Bowl in addition.

Macbride, David: NOTHING IN TOW
For 2 percussionists playing 2 automobiles.
Dur.: 10'.

Premiered by Brian Johnson and Stephen Lurie at First Night Hartford, New Year´s Eve 1990.

Equipment necessary:
- Two automobiles (suitable for this piece);
- Two portable radios with high powered speakers - placed on fron passengers seat.
- Two yarn mallets (i.e. Musser M-6 or similar) for each percussionist - one placed on front seat, one on rear seat.
- Two bass drum beaters (as large as possible) for each percussionist - placed in trunk.

Site:
A well-lit intersection, street, or parking lot with easy access for audience. Site should include entrance/exit for automobiles.

NOTHING IN TOW wmphasizes musical and visual virtuosity.
