 | Wayne Siegel was
born in Los Angeles in 1953. He has resided in Denmark since 1974. He
studied composition at the University of California at Santa Barbara
and at The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark. In 1978 he
received a three-year grant from the Danish Art Council and worked as a
free-lance composer in the years that followed. In 1986, after two
years as administrative director of the West Jutland Symphony and
Esbjerg Ensemble, he was appointed director of DIEM, the Danish
national center for electroacoustic music in Aarhus. In 1994 he chaired
the 19th International Computer Music Conference, ICMC 94, in Aarhus,
Denmark. He served on the board of directors of the ISCM World Music
Days 1996 held in Copenhagen in September 1996. In 1996 he was
appointed chairman of the two music committees of the Danish State Arts
Foundation. Commissions include works for the Aarhus Symphony, the
Zealand Symphony, the Kronos Quartet, Singcircle, the Lin Ensemble,
Danish Music Theater, Danish Contemporary Dance Theater, Harry
Sparnaay, Safri Duo and Trio Con Brio. His works often fall between
genres, combining diverse cultural elements and compositional
techniques, encompassing influences from folk music, avant garde, rock
and minimalism. This tendency is emphasized by his use of computers and
electronics in combination with acoustic instruments. This diversity
does not represent a clash in Siegel's music; instead, the many
elements of his musical background are synthesized into a single
personal style. |
