Italian classical composer and cellist, born in Lucca and died in Madrid, Spain.
Studied in Rome and went to Vienna in 1757 with his cellist father where both were employed in the Burgtheater. Most of the time thereafter he spent in Spain.
As a composer he is mostly known for chamber music for strings, but wrote also a large number of symphonies and 12 cello concertos.
Over 100 string quintets bear his name.
